Review of Squishy Bowls from Guyot Designs

You can squish and squash them into the smallest corner of your pack, and when you're ready to eat, they snap back into shape. Made of food grade silicone, these bowls are temperature safe to 400F, making them handle boiling water easily.

I tested the Squishy Bowl set consisting of a 6oz cup and a 16oz bowl with a freezer bag entrée of Pineapple Chicken Rice and a cup of hot tea. The bowl makes a great summer weight cozy, easily handling a quart sized Ziploc freezer bag. After adding boiling water for tea, the cup was still pretty comfortable to handle, although great care should be used since the cup and bowl's sides do squeeze, to avoid spilling hot liquid on hands or laps. After the entrée and beverage had a chance to cool, the cup and bowl fit very comfortably in the hand. Squeezing the sides slightly forms a nice spout for soups and drinks. I was a bit concerned about the silicone imparting a “rubbery” taste to the food but found that was not the case. When it’s time to clean up, the Squishy Bowl can easily be turned inside out and licked clean.

While ultralighters would find the Squishy Bowl set to be unnecessary weight, they are nice to carry in a group backpack. Then, if you want to have “family style” meals, you have a small and a large extra bowl.

I found Squishy Bowls a fun, worthwhile addition to my kitchen gear.
