Make Your Bottles Leak Resistant

I don't know about you, but I carry a few plastic bottles for things like sunscreen, alcohol (the fuel variety, of couse) and various other asundries.  I learned the hard way a few years ago that in rare cases if you squeeze the bottle hard enough or somehow in your pack, the material inside the bottles can ooze out from the cap and between the threads of the cap.  After doing some home plumbing it dawned on me to put Teflon Tape on the threads of my little bottles in my backpack.  Teflon tape is used during plumbing projects to seal threads when screwing fittings on like sho

Trail Purse

One thing I have been working on lately is a small lightweight "purse" to put items in that I don't want falling out of my pack (car keys, wallet, cell phone, etc.). These are items I also don't like leaving in my tent if I am set up in camp and want to wander away.

I am on my 4th prototype and might have a workable version now. Making gear is fun for me, and I love coming up with new ideas.

DIY Sewing

When I was a teen, the only reason I learned how to sew was due to my Home Ec teacher in Middle School. I don't remember her name, and I hated her at the time. I wanted to take wood shop, (how uncool was Home Ec in the early/mid 80's?) and my mom who couldn't sew a button on, made me take it.

The teacher must have seen something in me, becuase after that short trimester class in 7th grade, she made sure my mom signed me up for a whole year in 8th grade.

Homemade Tea Bags

Something you see pop up often on forums for trail cooking is making tea bags for coffee and tea use. While one can find fillable tea bags on the market, they are not commonly found in grocery stores, and are not exactly cheap. For less than half the price, if you have a sewing machine you can easily make all the disposable tea and coffee bags your heart could desire for trail adventures!
